Oibara was the Rokugani term for a hasty seppuku, which was made with only two cuts, instead the three of the ritualized seppuku. To perform the third cut it was necessary permission, and on the battlefield, when permission could not be granted, a samurai could still perform seppuku to avoid capture, but could only perform the first two cuts.
