An SS Hauptsturmführer questioned historical re-enactor Veit Harlan at Wawolnice after Harlan said the Birkhas ha-gomel in shul. The Hauptsturmführer first operated on the presumption that Harlan might actually be a Jew. When Harlan showed his papers confirmed that he was an Aryan, the Hauptsturmführer wanted to know why Harlan had made the prayer, and why Reb Eliezer had congratulated him. Harlan explained that he'd been injured during staged pogrom the day before, and that an actual Jew would have said the Birkhas ha-gomel. Harlan assured the SS man that he was simply staying in character.

After expressing disgust for how the Jews lived, he reminded Harlan not to forget that he was an Aryan, and left.
