The Trap Door was a children's claymation animated series which initially ran on Channel 4 from 1984 to 1986, but has since been repeated a number of times. A mix of horror, comedy and some fantasy, the series focused on the everyday life and mishaps of Berk, the overworked servant/chef to the mostly unseen Thing Upstairs. Berk was aided and abetted by his friend Boni, a sentient yet miserable skull, and his mostly unhelpful pet spider, Drutt. Berk's biggest problem however was the numerous monsters that would emerge from the titular trap door. Berk would always find some way to deal with the appearing monsters, occasionally sending them upstairs as The Thing's dinner, but in a twist of irony, he wouldn't have to if he listened to Boni and didn't keep opening the trap door. The Trap Door has since become a cult programme, probably thanks to the vocal performance of comedian Willie Rushton (who provided all voices), and the fact that the show had enough for adults to enjoy as well as children. Berk, Boni and Drutt have made speaking appearances in the Sonic the Comic Online Decap Attack story, Rooms, behind one of the numerous doors Chuck D. Head and Head check out in their exploration of Castle Frank N. Stein. On this occasion, Berk seems to have forgotten that he is supposed to be cooking The Thing Upstairs' dinner. Boni and Head are also portrayed as being friends. While many members of the Message Zone are fans of The Trap Door, the appearance of the characters was met with decidedly mixed reactions. Nonetheless, avatars of the characters have been made available for use on the forum.
