  • Katarína Horáková (*12 October 1934, Bratislava, Czechoslovakia - since 1993 Slovakia), publishes in English speaking countries as Katarina Horak, is a professor of Biology at Faculty of Chemical and Food Technology, Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava, Slovakia. Katarina Horak graduated with a M.S. in Microbiology from the Faculty of Natural Sciences, Comenius University, Bratislava. She earned her Doctor of Natural Science (RNDr.) in Microbiology at Charles University in Prague, Czech Republic. She received her Ph.D. in Microbiology and D.Sc. in Biology from the Slovak Academy of Science in Bratislava. She completed her post-doctoral training in the Department of Microbiology, University of Alberta, Canada, as well as the University of Alberta Cancer Research Unit (McEachern Laboratory) and Department of Biochemistry. She was then named Associate Professor of Biology and later promoted to Full Professor of Biology at the Faculty of Chemical and Food Technology, Slovak University of Technology. During her tenure on the Faculty of Chemical and Food Technology she trained hundreds of graduates in the field of microbiology and biomedical engineering who are now internationally recognized researchers. In addition to her pedagogical work she focused her career on the discovery of new natural and synthetic biologically active compounds with antimicrobial, antioxidant, and anticarcinogenic properties. She is the author/co-author of more than 150 scientific publications, dozens of university textbooks, and specialized book monographs. She has published in numerous scientific journals such as: Parasitology, Cancer Research, Carcinogenesis, Neoplasma, International Immunopharmacology, Cell Biochemistry and Function, Anti-Cancer Drugs, Chemico-Biological Interactions, Toxicology, Free Radical Biology & Medicine, Pharmacology & Toxicology, Life Sciences, General Physiology and Biophysics, Journal of Applied Toxicology, Letters in Applied Microbiology, Food and Agricultural Immunology, and Apoptosis. She was the Editor in Chief of COPERNICUS News, part of INCO COPERNICUS News. Dr. Horak is a devoted science advocate. She is the author of many popular science articles, films, and TV programs, and has also created a few instructive films herself. She was the head of international EU projects in Slovakia that developed very sensitive immunotests to monitor food safety. Based on the knowledge she gleaned from this field she began to dedicate herself to the study of proper nutrition, detoxification, and healthy lifestyles. In 1984, the Slovak University of Technology recognized Dr. Horak’s long pedagogical and scientific career by awarding her with their Silver Medal. For her lifelong creative work and for her contribution to the development of Slovak science she was also awarded The Premium Prize in 2008 from the Slovak Literary Fund, division of Scientific and Specialized Literature. Since 1997 Dr. Horak has cooperated with the editorial staff of the Slovak magazine Modern Woman. Here and in the magazine VitaFit, of which she is the president of the editorial committee, she publishes articles on the given topic. For many years she has maintained a regimen of healthy food combination and based on her experience wrote a book (The Separated Diet), which was published ten times between 1998 and 2003. In this book, and in companion books (The Separated Diet – And Now What?, Separated Diet Recipes and Portioning, Separated Diet in the Mediterranean, and Separated Diet Cleansing Treatments and Portioning) she provides instructions on how to maintain a healthy lifestyle. All these publications were met with great enthusiasm and have been printed multiple times. An incredible 300,000 copies have been sold in the relatively small (population 5 million) country of Slovakia. She also writes on solutions to common health problems, which she has compiled into books (Don‘t Be Afraid of Health, The Health Monitor, Body Detox, and Warning Signals of the Body).
