Lactate dehydrogenase is an enzyme that moderates the creation and destruction of lactate, a molecule involved in creating energy from glucose in the absence of oxygen. It is also involved in the metabolism of alcohol. It comes in two forms which are found in roughly equal quantities in a normally functioning body. A rise in the level of one of the forms is strongly indicative of myocardial infarction. High levels can also indicate cancer.
