  • She is a professor of English at the University of Rochester in New York and holds a PhD in medieval languages and literature. She teaches medieval literature, cultural studies, science fiction, and creative writing. Along with her published work on Old English, Middle Welsh and Old Norse, she has published stories in The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction and Terra Incognita. Her claim to fame is her creation of the Reginald Barclay character and coining the term holo-addiction. She wrote the story between fall 1988 and early 1989 and sent the script through an agent of the WGA to Paramount Pictures. After she got a reply she wrote six different plots and worked with Melinda Snodgrass and Michael Piller. She also visited the sets and met Patrick Stewart though she was not on set when "Hollow Pursuits" was filmed. Caves was interviewed by Robert Rowe for the article "Sarah Higley – Writer of Holodeck Pursuits" published in The Official Star Trek: The Next Generation Magazine issue 16, pp. 20-24.
