Mrs Kenworthy was the manager of the Weatherfield Building Society in January 1988 when Kevin Webster applied for a mortgage on 13 Coronation Street. Mrs Kenworthy took Kevin into her office to talk him through the application form, which he had already filled out. Her attention was immediately drawn to a question which Kevin had left blank, which asked whether he had previously been refused a mortgage. Kevin explained that he wasn't sure what to put as he and wife Sally had been turned down a mortgage with another building society because of an unpaid £200 debt of Sally's from 1985, which was now paid off, and so he had left Sally's name off this application. Mrs Kenworthy told Kevin that he had done the right thing by being honest and that it wouldn't be a problem.
