Malik ibn Anas accompanied Jalal ad-Din as a Muslim emissary from Constantinople to a heathen Bulgar Khan named Telerikh in order to attempt to convert him and his people to Islam. He served as a bodyguard and aid to ad-Din and Da'ud ibn Zubayr. He was selected in particular because he knew a little of the Bulgar speech.
