| - In 1868, Brigadier General Jacob Zeilin, the 7th Commandant of the Marine Corps, approved the Eagle, Globe and Anchor as the official emblem of the U.S. Marine Corps. The emblem consisted of an American Eagle with wings spread, standing on the Western Hemisphere of the terrestrial globe, holding in his beak a scroll inscribed "Semper Fidelis"
