There he was raised by Tusken Raiders. After expressing wishes to see the universe unfolding around him he was banished from his tribe and spent time traveling across the desert world. Maardok witnessed the cruelty of the Galactic Empire firsthand and decided to join the Rebel Alliance, which he would ultimately leave after suffering the loss of his many good friends. His time away would be short-lived however as he entered service in the Alliance Navy roughly a year after leaving the ground forces. As a pilot on board the Liberty he let his own "Bantha Squadron" in countless engagements against Imperials from the Battle of Hoth to Endor when the ship was destroyed. Maardok and most of the starfighter wings survived, however, and were transfered to other ships to continue war effort. In the years leading up to the Yuuzhan Vong War, Maardok worked his way up the chain of command until he reached the rank of commodore. By 20 ABY, he commanded the Grk'kkrs'ar, a Nebula-class Star Destroyer and flagship of Task Force Krayt. The commodore and his unit patrolled the Arkanis Sector for the five years leading up to the war with the Vong and became an integral part of the war effort once hostilities broke out. After the Fall of Coruscant, Maardok broke off of the New Republic and joined the fleet of Garm Bel Iblis, waging a private war against the extragalactic invaders. During this time, Maardok captained the Liberty, the last surviving ship of his task force after Coruscant and took on individual cells of the Peace Brigade under his own flag. He reluctantly rejoined the Republic during the Battle of Ebaq 9 and continued his service in the Galactic Alliance only as captain of his starship. He was present at the Liberation of Coruscant and was one of the objectors to the Yuuzhan Vong being allowed to stay within the known galaxy. When it came time to aid the Galactic Alliance in the peace effort, Maardok opted to relinquish his command and return home to Tatooine.
