At one point in the archives, Inquisitor Amberley Vail speculates that Cain may not in fact know the name of his own homeworld. However, he shows a definite affinity for underground passages and has a natural sense of direction when underground. He claims that his parents were killed while serving in the Imperial Guard, which is why he was sent to be trained as a Commissar. However, it has not been stated in which regiment they served. Though, most of the Imperium is unaware that his triumphs came mostly through sheer luck and, as a quite cowardly individual, he would much rather avoid being in battle(although, unlike other commissars, he doesn't sacrifice his own men unless it ensured his survival or victory), but he kept getting involved in increasingly dangerous missions. Around the age of 200, Cain retired from military service and became a professor at a schola progenium. It is uknown if he's really the lucky coward he claims to be or if he's actually a very skilled military leader.
