  • The Irish Republican Army (IRA) () was an Irish republican revolutionary military organization. It was descended from the Irish Volunteers, an organisation established on 25 November 1913 that staged the Easter Rising in April 1916. In 1919, the Irish Republic that had been proclaimed during the Easter Rising was formally established by an elected assembly (Dáil Éireann), and the Irish Volunteers were recognised by Dáil Éireann as its legitimate army. Thereafter, the IRA waged a guerrilla campaign against British rule in Ireland in the 1919-21 Irish War of Independence. Following the signing in 1921 of the Anglo-Irish Treaty, which ended the War of Independence, a split occurred within the IRA. Members who supported the treaty formed the nucleus of the Irish National Army founded by IRA leader Michael Collins. However, much of the IRA was opposed to the treaty. The anti-treaty IRA fought a civil war with their former comrades in 1922-23, with the intention of creating a fully independent all-Ireland republic. Having lost the civil war, this group remained in existence, with the intention of overthrowing both the Irish Free State and Northern Ireland and achieving the Irish Republic proclaimed in 1916.

  • The Irish Republican Army or (IRA) is used to refer to two different, historically linked organisations; the Provisional IRA and the Official IRA. The former were formed in 1969 and have been more active since then with a particularly high profile from their military campaign. The Provisional IRA was formed as a reaction to perceived inactivity of the Official IRA, who were formed in 1919, but whose profile dropped since the end of the Irish Civil War. The Provisional IRA, also known as the The Irish Republican Army, PIRA, Provos, or IRA (Óglaigh na hÉireann in Irish Gaelic) is a republican terrorist organisation that fought against the British in Northern Ireland, claiming to represent the largely Catholic nationalist community in Northern Ireland. The organisation is associated with the political party Sinn Féin (also known as Provisional Sinn Fein), although a direct association is officially denied. In 1981 an IRA prisoner serving a life sentence, Bobby Sands, was elected to the UK parliament while on Hunger Strike in the infamous Maze Prison. He died shortly after the election, but this was the beginning of a new strategy of Armalite and Ballot Box, combining politics with the armed struggle. The policy of violence was gradually undermined by increased faith in politics together with a number of peace initiatives and a loss of support for a violent program - the conciliatory handling of the situation first by John Major and later by Tony Blair is often held up as an example of an effective approach to a peace process. Two small factions within the IRA broke away from the main organisation to protest its participation in the peace process: these are known as the Real IRA (RIRA), which carried out the Omagh bombing in 1998, the bloodiest single incident in the Troubles (29 people were killed), and the Continuity IRA (CIRA).
  • The Provisional Irish Republican Army (commonly referred to as the Irish Republican Army or IRA) was an organization dedicated to the end of British rule in North Ireland, and to unite the island as a single nation. It was formed in 1969, when the group formerly called the Irish Republican Army was splintered over the issue of the use of violence to bring about Irish reunification. Members of the Provisional IRA were sometimes called "Provos". The IRA became obsolete by the end of the Eugenics Wars, when England withdrew from Ireland. However, some members who knew no other way of life persisted, and the rise of United Earth helped to bring other throwbacks to the movement. One such person was a man codenamed Easter, who aligned himself with an array of terrorists of differing ideologies in an Eastern European cell in the 2040s. (TOS novel: Strangers from the Sky) The TNG episode: "The High Ground" established that the reunification of Ireland did not occur until 2024, and happened as a direct result of terrorist activity, presumably by the IRA. In reality, an IRA cease fire has largely held since 1998, though the political status of Northern Ireland is yet unsettled.

They renounced such activity as part of the cease fire to end the violence in Northern Ireland in 1998, though some split radical groups continued violence until 2005. Some members of the group who now found themselves out of work could be found in Colombia working for drug cartels, such as Liam Connors. (SVU: Ghost)
