This lead to the mass defection of the Hardornen border guard, who joined Selenay's troops in Valdemar. When Ancar attacked across the border, he was defeated. He made one more attempt at invasion that summer before settling into a more protracted conflict. The war finally ended when a small assassination team, led by Princess Elspeth and Darkwind k'Treva, infiltrated the capital, and killed Ancar. His later successor, Tremane, willingly joined the Alliance.
