In 1394 he returned again to Speyer where he was promoted to treasurer. He later also gained positions in the cathedrals of Mainz, Worms and Würzburg. On 2 June 1396 Raban was elected the Bishop of Speyer. From 1400 until 1410 he acted as chancellor in the empire for King Rupert of the Palatinate. Raban attempted to have his nephew Reinhard succeed him in Speyer by giving him office at the expense of his brother Henry. In 1430 Raban was elected the Archbishop of Trier. Raban pawned the city of Cochem and the castle of Ehrenbreitenstein, which led to repeated conflicts throughout the following years. On 20 October 1438 Raban retired from the Bishopric of Speyer and Reinhard succeeded him as planned. In May 1439 Raban also retired from the Archbishopric of Trier. Raban died in November. Raban was a nepotist who followed the policies of his father, and his actions allowed the Helmstatts to become very influential in the region around Speyer.
