The X-20 Laser rifle is a modified version of Terran laser weaponry combined with psionic circuitry reverse engineered from liberated Protoss technology. During development of new technologies against the Protoss, Zerg, "Rogue" Terrans, and whatever else comes along, one researcher came up with a bold idea. His pitch: when using a sniper rifle, what comes first the bullet or the laser? The laser of course, so why develop something that will eventually run out of ammo at the worst of times? This intrigued some of their sponsors enough to allocate a decent amount of funds into the researcher's project. What resulted was the creation of the first of a line of psionic-based energy weapons to be used by Dominion forces.

When used, the gunman targets the victim with a special laser polarized to be invisible to even the Zerg's highly evolved eyes. Once the target has been spotted the rifle is charged with the user's own psionic energy before being released in a single powerful pulse (Beast Wars: Dinobot II; Halo: Spartan Laser). Due to psionic energy, the pulse is capable of penetrating all known forms of armor, alloys, energy fields, and substances conceived in the the Koprulu Sector. The X-20 is also capable of targeting areas/enemies for Nuclear strikes or Drop Pod landing zones like any other rifle Ghosts use, but with twice the range to avoid being too close to the impact site. Should the X-20 fall into the wrong hands, its back mounted fusion generator will automatically self-destruct if the user its tuned to does not deactivated it in time. Because of the cost to build these weapons, the Dominion reserves them strictly for high-level Black Ops. * Great damage to any armor type * Good against small to medium infantry units * Nearly unlimited ammo * Can tag areas/enemies for Nuclear Strike or Drop Pod LZ * Can charge a psionic pulse through the laser to increasing penetration damage * Fusion pack self-destructs with a mini-nuclear explosion if used by anyone other than the one genetically tuned to rifle * Slow to charge psionic pulse * Low firing rate * Laser has less effectiveness against large units such as Ultralisks * If weapon is to self-destruct, user needs to get a distance of at least 30 feet
