According to Palamas, her "particular specialties include ancient civilizations, relics, and myths." (TOS: "Who Mourns for Adonais?" ) The TOS novel Allegiance in Exile features an a and a officer, Mai Duyen Trinh (β), as one of its central characters. In the TNG era, it would seem this position still exists, possibly with the same name. Lt. Marla Aster was "ship's archaeologist" on the USS Enterprise-D until her death in TNG: "The Bonding" .

When she was promoted to the rank of captain and had an increase in duties aboard the USS Prospect-A, Lansing relinquished the role to Lieutenant Amy Peale in 2371. (Star Trek: The Prospect Chronicles) Incidentally, Peale was the former A & A officer aboard the USS Shabonee (NCC-64332). (Star Trek: Shabonee: "Dirge") Ensign Tyler Sinclair served as A & A officer aboard the USS Westphalen after his graduation from Starfleet Academy in the mid-2380s.
