He became King of France on 11 April 1814, after the downfall of Emperor Napoleon I, who was executed by King Louis XVIII's decree. He died on 16 September 1824 in the Louvre, Paris, France. He married on 14 May 1771 to Princess Mary Josephine of Savoy (1753-1810), a daughter of King Victor Amadeus II of Sardinia and his wife Princess Mary Antonia Ferdinanda of Spain. However, they had no issue, and the throne passed to his brother Charles.
