Peters started his NHL career with the Detroit Red Wings in 1965. He also played for the Los Angeles Kings. He would retire after the 1975 season. His father Jimmy "Shakey" Peters also played in the NHL. He played junior hockey for the Hamilton Red Wings from 1962 to 1964, winning a Memorial Cup in 1962. Hamilton was a farm team of the Detroit Red Wings at the time, so Peters turned pro in the Wings' system. In the NHL Peters played in 309 games and scored 37 goals and 36 assists. From 1985 to 1988 Peters was an assistant coach with RPI.
