Joseph Arthur Hammond (1874-1938) was a railway signalman and Labour Party politician in Poplar, East London. A member of Poplar Borough Council, Hammond was Mayor of Poplar in 1925-26. A supporter of the Poplar Rates Rebellion, he was not sent to jail but worked to secure the release of his colleagues. During Hammond's mayoral year the General Strike occurred. As an official of a railway union he was involved in the decision to end the strike in May 1926. He was attacked by an angry mob and injured on returning to Poplar Town Hall following the decision.
