In 2007, the American Express Board of Directors elected him an officer of the company and named him a member of the newly created American Express Operating Committee, the most senior management body responsible for developing the company's strategic direction and policies. Mr. Gupta has taken keen interest in the growth of the IIT Delhi program. He has been responsible for the initiation of a $100,000 endowment fund for the Amar S Gupta Chair Professorship in Decision Science at IIT Delhi. He has also helped in the setting up of American Express scholarships in the M.Tech Programme on Mathematics and Computing. Mr Gupta was named the IIT Delhi Excellence Foundation's Alumnus of the Year in 2004 and was presented with the Distinguished Alumni Service Award by IIT Delhi in 2006. Mr. Gupta serves on the Board of Directors of Big Brothers, Big Sisters of New York, the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi Excellence Foundation, and is a trustee of the University of Pennsylvania School for Advanced Studies for India. He is also a chartered member of The Indus Entrepreneurs and the America India Foundation.
