Named for the town of Fulda, the Fulda Gap was strategically important during the Cold War. The Fulda Gap was one of two obvious routes for a hypothetical Soviet tank attack upon West Germany from Eastern Europe, especially East Germany; the other route was the North German Plain (a third, less likely, route was up through the Danube River valley in Austria). The concept of a major tank battle along the Fulda Gap was a predominant element of NATO war planning during the Cold War, and weapons such as nuclear tube and missile artillery; the nuclear recoilless gun/tactical launcher Davy Crockett; Special Atomic Demolition Munitions; AH-64 Apache attack helicopter; and A-10 ground attack aircraft were developed with such an eventuality in mind. Use of the term "Fulda Gap" dates from at least the early 1950s. Man ging davon aus, dass die Armeen Moskaus im Westen Thüringens („Thüringer Balkon“) aufmarschieren, die Grenze in Richtung Fulda durchbrechen und durch das vergleichsweise flache Gelände und die kurze Strecke zwischen den Mittelgebirgen binnen zwei Tagen bis zum Rhein-Main-Gebiet vorstoßen könnten. Die Bundesrepublik wäre dann von den zahlenmäßig stark überlegenen Truppen des Ostblocks in zwei Hälften geteilt worden. Die Rhein-Main-Airbase, der wichtigste Nato-Luftwaffenstützpunkt in Europa, wäre ausgeschaltet worden. Im Rahmen des General Defense Plan wurden massiv amerikanische Truppenverbände (z.B. das 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment) um Fulda konzentriert, um einen solchen Angriff zu bremsen, bis Nachschub eintrifft. Zu diesem Zweck wurde sogar der Einsatz taktischer Atomwaffen in Betracht gezogen: Um die Rote Armee zu stoppen, hätte man sie auch mit Nuklearwaffen unter Beschuss genommen. Außerdem wurden in vielen Straßen, vermehrt innerhalb eines ca. 50 km breiten Gürtels entlang der Grenze Sprengschächte angelegt, die nach Zündung die Truppentransporte der feindlichen Armeen verlangsamt hätten. Diese Verteidigungspläne behielten ihre Gültigkeit bis 1994. right|framed|Fulda Gap Strategiespiel „The First Battle Of The Next War“ fotografiert im Antikriegsmuseum Berlin 1977 erschien in den USA ein Brettspiel, mit dem die strategischen Überlegungen simuliert werden konnten. In neuerer Zeit versucht ein Verein (Entwicklungsgesellschaft Fulda-GAP e. V.) die Geschichte des Kalten Krieges jungen Leuten anschaulich machen. Der Verein hat zu diesem Zweck einen unterirdischen Atombunker im Wetteraukreis als Domizil ausgewählt. Ende der 60er Jahre war dieser Bunker als Kommandozentrale für den Zivil- und Katatastrophenschutzstab Frankfurt am Main gebaut worden. Von hier hätten die Evakuierungs- und Rettungsmassnahmen für das Rhein-Main-Gebiet (damals ca. 4 Millionen Menschen) koordiniert werden sollen.
