In 1979, the Pioneer 11 probe investigated the magnetosphere of Jupiter and discovered that Saturn had a complex magnetosphere buffeted by solar wind. (TNG: "Loud As A Whisper" ) The planetoid that Data (under the control of Lore) took the shuttlecraft El-Baz to in 2369 had a high amount of electromagnetic activity in the magnetosphere, making scans of the planet's surface impossible. (TNG: "Descent" )

- A magnetosphere is a highly magnetized region around and possessed by an astronomical object. Earth is surrounded by a magnetosphere, as are the magnetized planets Mercury, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. Jupiter's moon Ganymede is magnetized, but too weakly to trap solar wind plasma. Mars has patchy surface magnetization. The term "magnetosphere" has also been used to describe regions dominated by the magnetic fields of celestial objects, e.g. pulsar magnetospheres.
