Wessex is the southernmost English region or state, and historically the trigger for the growth of English federalism which along with Scots and Welsh nationalism and the views of Sinn Fein, led to the break up of the United Kingdom in 1993. It consists of the former English counties of Hampshire, Wiltshire, Dorset, Devon, Somerset, Avon and the Isle of Wight, though these are now divided up differently, partly due to the existence of the new metropolitan county of Solent, popularly known as Greater Witonchester. It excludes the Grand Duchy of Cornwall, which is now an independent nation.
