Synopsis
  • Superboy revives after his recent battle with Knockout. As he comes to, Special Agent Sam Makoa and museum curator Dr. Arnold Kaua tell him that a strange being known as the Scavenger appeared and stole the Spear of Lona. Kaua provides Superboy with some history surrounding the spear's legendary status. He tells him that the spear's mystical properties are powered by a special gemstone that was lost ages ago. Reputedly, it was last seen in the volcanic mountain ranges of Maui. Superboy undertakes the task of tracking the gemstone down. He arrives on Maui and discovers a hidden cave concealed behind a waterfall. As he ventures farther into the cave, he finds the skeletal remains of several people littering the cavern floor. He proceeds onward until he finds the Scavenger waiting for him. The techno-pirate has likewise researched the legend of the spear and tracked the gemstone down to Maui. Back in Honolulu, Dubbilex intercepts a telepathic distress signal from Guardian back at Project Cadmus. He informs Dubbilex that a genetic degenerative disorder has been affecting all of the clones, and is concerned that Superboy may soon become ill as well. The two begin fighting one another, and their battle succeeds in unearthing the power stone. Scavenger grabs it and places it into its special housing on the tip of the Spear of Lona. He throws the spear at Superboy, but the young hero manages to deflect it with his tactile telekinesis. He then grapples with Scavenger and uses his TK to loose the gemstone from the spear’s headpiece. Scavenger looks on in horror as he watches the stone fall into a riverbed of lava. He prepares to dive in after it, but Superboy rips off the villain's talisman of protection. Realizing that the battle is lost, Scavenger teleports away. Superboy flies away from the volcano, but suddenly feels very ill. He passes out in midair and crashes on the ground below. When he awakens, he finds himself in a hospital bed surrounded by Tana Moon, Dubbilex and the Leeches. He professes to feel fine, but cannot conceal the compulsive coughing that has overtaken him.
