In 2006, Agent Akela Amador led a raid on one of Vanchat's gulags in which most of her team was killed and Amador was captured. Following the Battle of New York, Vanchat specialized himself in obtaining samples of alien technology and metals, selling them in the black market. Therefore, Agent Grant Ward was tasked with obtaining a Chitauri Neural Link that had come into Vanchat's possession. Vanchat was taken into custody by a S.H.I.E.L.D. team under the direction of Agent Victoria Hand during a transaction to sell a piece of Chitauri metal to Emily Deville.

Vanchat was taken into custody by a S.H.I.E.L.D. team under the direction of Agent Victoria Hand during a transaction to sell a piece of Chitauri metal to Emily Deville.
S.H.I.E.L.D. needed information from Vanchat as to the whereabouts of missing Agent Phil Coulson, who had been abducted by the Centipede Project. Vanchat was, among other things, a dealer in alien metals, and the Centipede Group utilized his services in obtaining the Chitauri metal used in constructing their Centipede Devices.
Vanchat was interrogated in the Cage but unwilling to provide any information until Agent Grant Ward threatened to open the airlock. After giving S.H.I.E.L.D. everything they needed, Vanchat was taken to The Fridge for holding.
