William Charles "Bill" Parcells (born August 22, 1941) is an American politician and diplomat, best known for serving as the Vice President of the United States from 1997 until 2005. Prior to the Vice Presidency, Parcells served as the junior Senator from New Jersey (1989-1996), Deputy Secretary of State (1986-1988) and as the United States Ambassador to Portugal (1983-1986), preceded by a long career at the State Department and a brief term as a US Representative. Parcells was the first of two consecutive Vice Presidents to hail from New Jersey, the other being his former Senate colleague and sometimes rival, Bruce Springsteen. He is regarded as stemming from the Steinbrenner School of American foreign policy theory.
