Fake Item Boxes are items in Mario Kart 64, Mario Kart: Double Dash!!, Mario Kart DS, and Mario Kart Wii. They can easily be mistaken for real Item Boxes because of their similar shape, size, and animation. The effect is usually stronger from a greater distance away. However up close, Fake Item Boxes have inverted ? symbols and may turn red depending on the game. They do not move either in some games.

  • Fake Item Boxes appear in Koopa Kart with their normal functions.
  • A Fake Item Box is an Item introduced in Mario Kart 64. It greatly resembles an Item Box, with the only real difference being the question mark and coloration (depending on the game). Instead of facing right side up, the question mark is facing upside down. In Mario Kart: Double Dash!! the fake item boxes have a second upside down question mark and will flash red. In Mario Kart DS the fake item box appears on the touch screen as red instead of the normal blue. They do not have the question mark nor do they spin.
  • Fake Item Boxes are recurring weapons in the Mario Kart series. They pose a threat to everyone on the course unless they have a star or Bullet Bill. Fake Item Boxes resembles regular Item Boxes, but have a slight shade of red to them, and the "?" mark in them is upside down. If placed in the right place, anyone can easily be fooled into hitting them thinking that they are real Item Boxes. If you are hit by one of these, you flip and your kart stops. Despite their absence in Mario Kart 7 and Mario Kart 8, they appear in Mario Kart Arcade GP DX.
  • The Fake Item Box has appeared in all of the Mario Kart games except for Super Mario Kart, where item panels were used instead of boxes. The fake item boxes get their look back from Mario Kart Double Dash!! in Mario Kart Wii except they get a texture change, along with its counterpart, the item box. Both sport rainbow-dot texture patterns now instead of a checkerboard texture. They also behave in the same manner as in Mario Kart Double Dash!! and even spin around like normal item boxes.

In battle/team race mode, the fake item boxes will become blue in the blue team, but retain their original color in the red team. At first glance, fake item boxes in the blue team look vaguely similar to regular item boxes, but if the player happens to look closer, the fake item boxes don't have a rainbow pattern on them and sport a ¿ like regular fake item boxes.

If you are playing on multiplayer, or on wi-fi, you can strategically place your Fake Item Box inside a real Item Box so that some other poor sap runs into it with no clue how it happened! This perfect placing takes practice, and experts have figured out how to know when there's a fake one inside. There is also a VERY easy way to know where a fake Item Box is. You simply look at your map on the bottom screen when you are approaching an Item Box, and if it's a fake one, then it will appear dark red, and if it's real, then it will be a light shade of blue. In Mario Kart: Double Dash!! and Mario Kart Wii, trying to think they are fake or real is extremely easy and can be easily recognized because they are dark red with black spot rather than being blue, cyan and green. They also have upside down ? mark while real ones have their marks right way up. They just look like real ones, but knocks you out when you accidentally bumped into them. Despite their absence in Mario Kart 7 and Mario Kart 8, they appear in Mario Kart Arcade GP DX.

They also make an appearance in Mario Kart Wii, appearing similar to the one in Mario Kart: Double Dash!!. Unlike Mario Kart DS Fake Item Boxes, these bounce when they hit the ground. Also, in Balloon Battle or Coin Runners, Blue Team's Fake Item Boxes are blue, which makes them a little hard to notice.
