The 2012 Atlantic hurricane season was extremely active, becomimg the second-most active Atlantic hurricane season on record. With 22 named storms, only 2005 surpassed 2012 in activity. The season began on June 1 and ended on November 30; dates that conventionally delimit tropical cyclone formation in the North Atlantic. However, the season's first storm, Tropical Storm Alberto, formed on May 9, the earliest formation of a pre-season tropical cyclone since Tropical Storm Ana in 2003. Ten days later, Hurricane Beryl formed off the coast of Florida, becoming the first occurence of two pre-season tropical cyclones since 1951, and the first May hurricane since 1970. Beryl made landfall in northern Florida with winds of 70 miles per hour, becoming not only the strongest May tropical cyclone on

  • The 2012 Atlantic hurricane season was extremely active, becomimg the second-most active Atlantic hurricane season on record. Beryl made landfall in northern Florida with winds of 70 miles per hour, becoming not only the strongest May tropical cyclone on record, but also the strongest landfalling pre-season storm ever recorded. Another record was set by Hurricane Gordon, which became the most northeasterly major hurricane on record. Nadine became the fourth longest-lived Atlantic hurricane on record, with a duration of 22.25 days. The season's final storm, William, became extratropical on November 19. An unnamed tropical storm also formed in July. Impact during the season was extensively destructive, with effects felt throughout the Caribbean, Mexico, and Gulf and East Coasts of the United States. In late May, Hurricane Beryl moved ashore northern Florida as a strong tropical storm, causing five deaths. In mid-June, Tropical Storm Debby caused widespread flooding and erosion in western Florida, killing three. Meanwhile, Hurricane Ernesto struck Cozumel and the Yucatán Peninsula as a strong Category 2 hurricane, causing $1 billion in damages and resulting in nineteen deaths. Soon after, Tropical Storm Florence's precursor disturbance caused catastrophic flooding throughout Cape Verde, whilst Tropical Storm Helene and Hurricane Gordon caused twelve and nine fatalities after striking Mexico and the Azores, respectively. Hurricane Isaac, a Category 3 on the Saffir-Simpson scale, caused extensive flooding and damage throughout the Caribbean while a tropical storm. Isaac then made landfall in Louisiana twice, once as a minimal hurricane and the latter as a strong tropical storm. Aggregates from Isaac total $5.6 billion, with nearly 51 deaths in all. Following Isaac, Hurricane Leslie made landfall on Bermuda as a tropical storm, prior to striking Atlantic Canada as an unusually vicious extratropical cyclone with hurricane-force winds. Hurricane Nadine also impacted the Azores for several days as it meandered erratically around the archipelago. However, Hurricane Sandy was by far the costliest and deadliest, first making landfall in eastern Cuba as a Category 4 hurricane. Sandy then grew to an enormous size following its departure, causing extensive damage in Florida and the Bahamas as a Category 2. Traveling up the East Coast of the United States, Sandy took nearly two days to clear the state of New Jersey after making landfall there as a strong Category 1 hurricane with an enormous band of winds. Engulfing nearly all of the eastern United States, Sandy caused $98 billion in damages, second only to Hurricane Katrina. Collectively, the storms of 2012 caused $102.3 billion in damages and claimed 329 lives. The aggregates made this year the costliest since 2005 and the deadliest since 2008.
