He is best known for his role as Grantly Budgen in the television series Waterloo Road and as Steve McDonald's therapist in the soap opera Coronation Street. He also had a small yet significant role in Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy. He has recently completed his 4th episode of "Doctors" as different characters. Philip also shot "Suspects" for Channel 5 in November 2015.

He has built up a long list of credits since the 1970s and one of his first television roles with a regular part in the adaptation of R.F. Delderfield's A Horseman Riding By. Many further roles followed including appearances in Bull Week, Juliet Bravo, The Professionals, The Paradise Club, Minder, regular roles in Wing and a Prayer, City Central and Cutting It and since 2006 a starring role in Waterloo Road as teacher Grantly Budgen. On the big screen he had a small part in the 1999 film Sleepy Hollow with Johnny Depp.
