- On July 8th 1947 an unidentified flying object crashed outside of Roswell, New Mexico. This UFO was actually an derelict Covenant reconnaissance vessel, similar in design to the Seraph-class Starfighter, only much older.
- Although the crash is attributed to U.S. Military Operations some speculate that it was in fact a UFO containing extraterrestrials. Since the crash the Roswell Incident has been the center of a lot of controversy and conspiracy theories have even arose from it. The United States Air Force stated that what was recovered from the Roswell Incident crash site was actually an experimental high-altitude surveillance balloon which belonged to that was then known as Mogul and therefore was actually terrestrial in origin. __NOEDITSECTION__
- The Roswell UFO Incident involved the recovery of materials near Roswell, New Mexico, USA, in July 1947 by a man named Mac Brazel. The incident has since become the subject of intense speculation, rumor, questioning and research. There are widely divergent views on what actually happened and passionate debate about what evidence can be believed. The United States military maintains that what was recovered was a weather balloon that had crashed. However, many UFO proponents believe the wreckage was of a crashed alien craft and that the military covered up the craft's recovery. The incident has turned into a widely-recognized and referenced pop culture phenomenon, and for some, Roswell is synonymous with UFOs. It likely ranks as the most famous alleged UFO incident.
- The Roswell incident was an incident when in the late 1940s the US military removed material from Roswell in New Mexico. Straight Dope claims the debris was from a military balloon the US was using to monitor USSR Nuclear weapon tests. This would have been classified information at the time and the US military would have wanted it under wraps.

Any number of Ufologists insist that the debris from an alien spacecraft was removed. Those who claim aliens were involved mislead people about the numbers of witnesses and/or the relevance and reliability of witness accounts. Some accounts were fabrications, for example a clerk claims the FBI interrupted a teletype message she was sending about the flying disk though a teletype machine of the time couldn't have been interrupted in the way she describes.

The incident has turned into a widely-recognized and referenced pop culture phenomenon, and for some, Roswell is synonymous with UFOs. It likely ranks as the most famous alleged UFO incident. After the incident, several fictional stories, television shows, and books attempting to explain the Roswell incident have been published, further adding to the popularity of the incident. There is almost no more controversy that the military's explanation was some sort of coverup. It is interesting to note that some tests of atomic weaponry detonated underground were performed close to the area where the incident happened.
