The Girl Customer called into Sylvia's Separates on Gail Potter's first day of work there in April 1976 to enquire if a pink angora jumper in the window was in size 14. Gail told her no and the customer was about to leave when Elsie Howard quickly intervened and told the satisfied customer that if she came back on Friday, they would have the item for her. Roy Thornley, who was in the shop at the time in his capacity of Sylvia Matthews's merchandise manager, told Gail to learn from Elsie who had said just the right thing to the customer.
