Athenne felt cold, freezing despite the warmth at her back. She gasped as she tried to move her broken body backwards, away from the bodies, away from the blood. Useless, her legs were trapped deep under the boulder the demons had flung after her when she’d tired to run. It’d been too late, as always. She loved taking the blows and mocking the creatures, then calling upon the light to restore her. Not this time though. Athenne swore as she struggled with the massive rock. She knew this would happen! Why had she ignored the rumors of trouble at Silvermoon when she had known that M’uru would leave them someday. Groaning she attempted to channel the light like she always had. Nothing. Should have listened, should have learnt it for herself rather then depend on a Naaru.

Giving it up as a lost cause Athenne leaned back and looked up at the sky. It was night, dark clouds obscuring the stars. Sun, she didn’t even know where she was, everywhere seemed dark these days. Sounds of clicking and scraping began to reach her ears; the demons were searching, craving her blood. Tears welled up in Athenne’s eyes as she searched desperately for someone, anyone, to save her. But there was no one around, she was alone as always. Stupid, stupid. It wasn’t supposed to end like this, she was still so young! With a sob Athenne tried to wrench herself free, she’d never thought about her death before, asides from that niggling ‘what if’ that hovered at the back of her mind, always quickly repressed when it came to the fore. At least her family was safe and happy and really, that’s all that mattered. Falling back against the bloodstained earth Athenne fumbled for her sword hilt and raised the blade in salute to the sun she would never see again. As the scrapings grew closer she struggled onto her elbows and awaited her fate with a scowl. When the first misshapen head cleared the boulder she hawked a massive spitball and let fly at the grinning creature. It fell short and hit her own battered breastplate. “Oh fuck this” she spat as she brought her sword crashing down across her own throat. Better to die on her own terms.
