She served in the Atlantic Ocean the Pacific Ocean and provided destroyer escort protection against submarine and air attack for Navy vessels and convoys. She was named in honor of Milton Ernest Ricketts who was awarded the Medal of Honor posthumously for his valiant actions during the Battle of the Coral Sea. The Ricketts (DE-254), a destroyer escort, was laid down 16 March 1943 by Brown Shipbuilding Co., Houston, Texas; launched 10 May 1943; sponsored by Mrs. Milton E. Ricketts, widow of Lieutenant Ricketts; and commissioned 5 October 1943 at Houston, Lt. Comdr. Glenn L. Rollins, USCG, in command.
