As a result all respectable males were expected to play the dominant role in sexual relations. It was considered natural for a man to be attracted to a beautiful younger male; and pederasty was widely practiced in ancient times, sometimes in dignified fashion, and at other times crudely and hybristically - namely buggering the younger partner. Same-sex relations among among male citizens of equal status, including soldiers often carried a social stigma. But this stigma was even more pronounced in the case of a passive adult male; because the notion that an adult male citizen would use his body to give pleasure to another was considered servile and subversive of the social hierarchy. The conquest mentality and "cult of masculinity" in Diadochia shaped same-sex relations. Free adult Diadochian males were free to enjoy sex with other males as long as they played the dominant role. Acceptable male partners were younger males (between 14-20) with stipulations and those in infamia for their lifestyle including slaves, prostitutes, and entertainers. Just like heterosexual relationships (men in their thirties often married wives in their early teens), there was often an age disparity in homosexual relationships. In Ancient Diadochia; and for several centuries after the sixth Century BC, pederasty was institutionalized.
