| - Gorgonops was a gorgonopsid, a type of a mammal-like reptile that flourished during the Permain, but died out before the Mesozoic.
- D'après Sigogneau-Russell (1989) :
* Gorgonops torvus Owen, 1876. L'espèce-type du genre ;
* Gorgonops longifrons (Haughton 1915) ;
* Gorgonops whaitsi (Broom, 1912) ;
* Gorgonops dixeyi (Haughton, 1926) ;
* Gorgonops kaiseri (Broili & Schroeder, 1934) ;
* Gorgonops eupachygnathus (Watson, 1921).
- Gorgonops was a largest predator around in its time. Although Gorgonops was a reptile, it was also closely related to the mammals. It is a mammal-like reptiles, reptiles that evolved into mammals. This can be told by the varieties of teeth found in mammals (molars, canines and incisors) that are also found in these special reptiles. Gorgonops also had its legs tucked under its body to support its weight when moving about. Most reptiles walk at a sprawling gait, like lizards, but others walked upright like Gorgonops and the Dinosaurs.
- Gorgonops was the largest, and fiercest predator of the Late Permian period. It preyed upon what ever it came across, mostly large herbivores such as Scutosaurus. It was perfectly suited to its desert environment, having evolved from the early predators of the Permian like Dimetrodon. When the great Permo-Triassic extinction evetn came this predator was one of the first to die out. Being so large it needed a substantial amount of food, so when prey disappeared they turned on each other.
