John Augustus Nicholay (c.1798-20 November 1873) was a furrier and local Liberal Party politician active in the St Marylebone area. Nicholay carried on business in Oxford Street, and was furrier to the Court of Queen Victoria and to a number of other European royal families. He was regarded as a leading member of the Liberals in the Marylebone Parliamentary Borough, working hard to further the interests of the working class residents of the area.

  • John Augustus Nicholay (c.1798-20 November 1873) was a furrier and local Liberal Party politician active in the St Marylebone area. Nicholay carried on business in Oxford Street, and was furrier to the Court of Queen Victoria and to a number of other European royal families. He was regarded as a leading member of the Liberals in the Marylebone Parliamentary Borough, working hard to further the interests of the working class residents of the area. He also took an interest in the emergence of democratic and revolutionary movements in Europe, and was responsible for bringing the Hungarian leader, Lajos Kossuth and the Italian politician, Giuseppe Garibaldi, to London. When the Metropolis Management Act 1855 created an elected Vestry for St Marylebone, Nicholay was one of its first members. He was also one of the parish's representatives on the Metropolitan Board of Works holding the chair until the chairman had been selected [1]. He held both posts until his death.
