  • South Island (サウスアイランド Sausu Airando?) is a location in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is also the main setting of Sonic the Hedgehog (1991) and has made many appearances in the earlier games. South Island is known to be a trove of gems and ancient ruins, that supposedly shifts along the water due to some connection to the Chaos Emeralds. The island is also inhabited by animals.

  • South Island (jap. サウスアイランド Sausu Airando) ist ein Ort der Sonic the Hedgehog-Serie.
  • South Island is a region of Mobius that contains many of the Hill Zones - Green Hill, Emerald Hill etc. It is the home of Sonic the Hedgehog and the Freedom Fighters. Other notable towns are Blenheim, Ashburton, Timaru, and Queenstown. (Some sentimental folk would include Reefton in that list; it does at least hold a Southern Hemisphere record. Whale-watchers would include Kaikoura. Country and western singers would include Gore. Architects would include Oamaru because of the Oamaru stone. There are just so many great places in the South Island.)

  • The South Island is the larger of the two major islands of New Zealand, the other being the more populous North Island. The Māori name for the South Island, Te Wai Pounamu, meaning "The Water's of Greenstone" (greenstone being jade), possibly evolved from Te Wāhi Pounamu which means "The Place Of Greenstone". The island is also known as Te Waka a Māui which means "Māui's Canoe". In the 19th century, some maps named the South Island as Middle Island or New Munster, and the name South Island or New Leinster was used for today's Stewart Island/Rakiura.
