The Grand Duchy of Salzburg was a state of the Holy Roman Empire existing from 1803 until 1805, in the former secular lands of the Archbishopric of Salzburg. The only Grand Duke was Ferdinand, the former Grand Duke of Tuscany. Ferdinand was made an Elector of the Holy Roman Empire. By the Treaty of Pressburg in 1805, Ferdinand had to surrender Salzburg but was rewarded with the new Grand Duchy of Würzburg, created in the lands of the former Bishopric of Würzburg. Salzburg itself was annexed by Austria.
