Dunkerron Castle is located in Templenoe, near Kenmare, County Kerry, Munster in south-west Ireland. The castle can be associated with the O'Sullivan family. One of the last members of a branch of the O'Sullivans was Donal O'Sullivan who died in 16 April 1754. Donal died without issue or heirs. The title he bore, "The Prince of Dunkerron", became extinct on his death. The British did issue a Baron Dunkeron title to the Petty family in the 17th century. It remained right up to modern times. This was not an Irish title in the sense it was granted by an invading society and not native Irish. Regardless, all such titles were abolished in 1922 by the new Irish Free State. Recently there has been a private revival of the title of "The Prince of Dunkerron" by a member of the Sullivan family.
