Tommy Ratcliffe was a simple-minded elderly man who, along with Stan Ogden, was a nightwatchman at Hulmes Bakery. He knew and cooperated with Stan’s plans to bed down in a bakery van each night and as he himself couldn’t sleep at night, he was more than happy to keep watch while Stan slept. He thought Stan was one of life’s philosophers and asked him how he could sleep at night when he couldn’t. Stan replied that it was having a clear conscience that was the key.
