The movement was founded by former Imperial leaders or members of their families as a direct opposition to the policies of the new Emperor, yet does not threaten the legitimacy of his reign. The movement is led by Reydovan scientist Baron August von Spee and the younger siblings of the current Emperor - his brothers Dominic and Travis (though he is considered persona non grata by the Reydovan Empire), and his sisters Anastasia and Ashleigh. Under the terms of an Imperial edict issued by Emperor Joshmaul I in 2321, nonviolent political demonstrations are legal in the Reydovan Empire; however, Kieran II is seen as a radical powermonger, and his Chancellor, Marshal Jeremiah Neill, a heavy-handed militarist - meaning that the Emperor may move to officially suppress the movement and, if necessary, execute members of his own family to ensure his supremacy. The name of the Black Rose was coined by Joshua Underwood, both referring to the nickname used by his stepfather, and the White Rose, a German resistance movement against Nazi rule during Earth's Second World War.
