He recorded a number of captain's logs, which were later seen in a list sorted by stardate on Captain Jean-Luc Picard's monitor on aboard the USS Enterprise-D. He was killed when his ship self-destructed. (TNG: "Contagion" , okudagram) He was named after episode co-writer Steve Gerber. (Star Trek Encyclopedia, 3rd ed., p. 541) His first name is spelled two different ways in the list; three times with a "v" and once with a "ph".
