Mont Saint Michel is located on a tidal island in the Manche department of Normandy, France. The island was once known as Mont Tombe and due to its location, has been used as a stronghold since the 6th century. History tells an interesting story as to how Mont Saint Michel became a spiritual centre. The stories state that the bishop of Avranches, Saint Aubert, in around 708AD was visited by a vision of the Archangel Michael. Michael told him to construct a church on the Mont Tombe however Aubert ignored his orders.

  • Mont Saint Michel is located on a tidal island in the Manche department of Normandy, France. Unfortunately for Aubert, Michael wouldn't take no for an answer and so he burnt a hole into Aubert's skull with his finger. Unsurprisingly Aubert in 709 built a small chapel which he in turn dedicated to Saint Michael. In around 966 benedictine monks settled on the island and the construction of the famous abbey began. Religious people from all over made pilgrimages to Mont Saint Michel from this time onwards with many still making the journey today. Construction of the Abbey continued throughout the centuries with defensive walls being built in the 14th century to protect the abbey and the islands occupants during the 100 years wars. Mont Saint Michel was a highly important place with it even being depicted upon the Bayeux tapestry. The island and the monks gave their support to William the Conqueror on his claim to the throne of England and so on his success William gave the monks Saint Michaels Mount in Cornwall which resembles Mont Saint Michel. In 1979 Mont Saint Michel gained the privilege of being classified as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Mont Saint Michel is one of the most visited attractions in France outside of Paris.
