The photonic missile was a projectile weapon. It came in various sizes. Starting from the late 23rd century, the most common shipboard missile was the photonic missile, used by several species, namely the Kzintis, the Klingons and later the Gorn. There was at least one instance of Federation-mounted photonic missiles on small craft. (Star Fleet Battles, Star Trek Online, VOY: "Extreme Risk") Valkyrie-class fighters could fit eight R-5162 photonic missiles or two full-sized photon torpedoes. (Star Trek: False Vacuum: "Black Tornado")

  • A photonic missile was a starship-mounted weapon, a type of projectile weapon designed by Seven of Nine in 2375 for use aboard the Delta Flyer shuttlecraft. This photonic weapon was constructed based on Seven's knowledge of Borg technology. (VOY episode: "Extreme Risk")
  • Photonic missiles were Sontaran heavy weapons. In 1902, the Fourth Doctor feared the Sontarans would barrage Earth with photonic missiles in response to an incursion by the Rutan Host. (TV: Horror of Fang Rock) In 2371, at the Battle of Antares, a Sontaran Linx class cruiser destroyed a Rutan assault cruiser with a single photonic missile after the Rutan vessel lost shields. The missiles proved useful when combating the Malon, who were attempting to use their own shuttle to appropriate the USS Voyager's multispatial probe, which had become trapped in the atmosphere of a gas giant. (VOY: "Extreme Risk") Later that year, Paris attempted to use a photonic missile to destroy an oxygen refinery under the surface of a large, spaceborne ocean, in an unauthorized attempt to stop the ocean's inhabitants, the Moneans, from damaging the containment field keeping the ocean intact. Before the missile could impact the refinery, however, it was intercepted and destroyed by a photon torpedo fired from Voyager. (VOY: "Thirty Days")
