In 1586, under Abba Walda Giyorgis, a new church known as Qadamit Maryam was built to replace the cave Church. In the following centuries the monastery remained an ardent supporter of the Qebet (or Unction) faction. The monastery of Debre Demah and Debre Libanos of Shewa were always close.
