The frightener is a desert dwelling monster. It is nearly invincible, especially when controlled by a mage. Even witchers prefer to avoid fighting this beast if they can. Fortunately, this overgrown insect is sensitive to loud noises which deafen it and render it defenceless. The first frightener was created by the mage Dagobert Sulla. After creating the beast, he is said to have exclaimed "What have I done?" and promptly destroyed it. It is also mentioned in the same breath as giant scorpions, scarletias, wights, lamias and crab spiders.

  • Frighteners are Spectres who were once human, but were killed in very horrible, violent ways. While they may not have been cruel people in life, their anger at death caused them to become Spectres almost immediately. They tend to bear the marks of their destruction, and use methods that compliment them; a person killed in a fire will use fire to wreak havoc, or a plane crash victim will become a gremlin of sorts to cause more crashes. Frighteners are single-minded in their goals and will pursue it until they succeed or are destroyed. They are one of the first Spectre breeds discovered in Orpheus.
