- Jor-El was one of the planet Krypton's foremost scientists, the husband of Lara-El, the son-in-law of Sul-Van, and the biological father of Kal-El.
- After tremors shook Krypton, Jor-El eventually came to the conclusion that the planet Krypton was soon to explode. But Krypton's council members would not listen to his claims, considering him nothing more than laughingstock. Jor-El built a ship large enough for two, but in the last moment, he and Lara decided to send his son alone to Earth, where he was safe from Krypton's destruction, however, Jor-El was killed along with all the other countless millions of Kryptonians on Krypton.

He resided first in the spaceship, after its destruction in the Kawatche Caves and finally in the Fortress of Solitude.

Although he was greatly respected amongst his colleagues, they ridiculed him when he predicted the destruction of the planet through his experiments. Jor-El is also the father of Kal-El, the boy who would become Superman on Earth and uncle of Kara Zor-El who becomes Supergirl on Earth. Prior to Krypton's destruction, he launched Kal-El, as a baby, on an experimental spacecraft toward Earth, a planet he had previously visited.
- Jor-El is a fictional character from the Superman comic books, published by DC Comics. Created by American writer Jerry Siegel and Canadian-born artist Joe Shuster, he first appeared in Action Comics #1 as Superman's biological father. Jor-El is usually portrayed as closely resembling the later appearance of Kal-El as the adult Superman. In the 2006 Richard Donner cut of Superman II (actor Marlon Brando did not appear in the original 1980 release of the film), Lex Luthor notes a resemblance between Jor-El and Superman.

On the planet Krypton, where all people have evolved into an extremely advanced race of pompous buffoons, he was ignored for his silly theories regarding the end of the world. Unfortunately, of all of his doom prophecies, he wouldn't actually get one right until his fourteenth try.
