Nick lived with his mother until the age of nine, when she was killed walking across an intersection. Sent to an orphanage, unable to communicate and bullied by the other children, Nick retreated within himself, until a fellow deaf-mute named Rudy Sparkman forced him out of his shell and taught him to read and write. When the orphanage went bankrupt a teenaged Nick ran away, struggling to earn GED credits and taking odd manual jobs to get by.

Due to the panic caused by the prospect of becoming both blind and deaf, Andros accidentally fires the gun holstered on his belt and the bullet scrapes his leg, causing the limb to become infected. Andros eventually recovers and begins his journey to Hemingford Home, Nebraska. Along the way he meets Cullen, and later, Brentner, June Brinkmeyer, Gina McCone, Dick Ellis, and Olivia Walker—the group becomes an alternate family to him. Andros leads the band of survivors to both Nebraska and Mother Abagail, who guides them onto Boulder, where they make and set up their base of operations. Andros serves on the Free Zone Committee, for which he is the leading thinker, and eventually recruits Cullen as a member of the 3 spies, who travel to the West coast, Las Vegas, Randall Flagg's and his evil follower's base of operations. Andros is murdered by Lauder's attempted attack on the committee and it is later revealed that it was Andros who was meant to lead the stand against Flagg. Andros later reappears as a spirit to Cullen and fully able to speak, guiding Cullen as he tries to return home, and showing Tom Cullen how to save the life of a very sick Stuart Redman. In the revised–expanded edition, Andros temporarily loses sight in one of his eyes following the attack from Booth, the leader of the four thugs. Booth is subsequently shot and killed by Andros, but the resulting damage means that Andros must wear an eye patch for most of the remaining story. In the miniseries, Andros is portrayed by Rob Lowe, and is at one point stated to be from Ridley, Pennsylvania.
