Somewhat more commonly, they may cause a paraneoplastic syndrome - polycythemia. Uterine fibroids can also cause bleeding and anemia. If the fibroid causes no other symptoms, it is usually left in place and monitored as the surgery to remove it will usually have unacceptable side effects, such as removal of much or all of the surrounding tissue.
