Mary Diggins was the second landlady of the Rovers Return. Mary and husband George ran the pub from 1918 to 1937 and were the immediate predecessors of Jack and Annie Walker. Mary was very keen on using the Select bar as much as possible. Variety shows were held there monthly throughout the 1920s, with a notable date being the celebrating of the birth of Princess Elizabeth of York in April 1926, for which Mary booked Mabel Grimshaw aka Rosa Hanbury to sing. The Diggins lasted until 1937 when they decided they'd had enough of the Rovers and sold the tenancy to buy a boarding house in Blackpool.
